I sometimes think I find more humor on the front page of the paper than on the comics page. Case in point, major headline Oct. 12, “Plan: Cut Route 4 to 3 lanes.” And what may I ask is that going to do?
We don’t need to have a bunch of studies done by state and local officials, which must cost a lot of money to do, to figure this one out. The problem is, people drive too fast and don’t pay attention. Why are they all in such a hurry that they need to go 70-plus miles per hour on Route 4? Do they get up late, electricity lost in that part of town or what? I think it’s just because they can. Sure, the state and county people sit out there in plain view; kind of like a warning: “We are watching you.”
Start giving some tickets. Let’s crank up the ante. First ticket, $150, second, $300. I think if you hit them hard enough in the pocketbook, they will start obeying the law. If they persist, take their license.
Cutting Route 4 down to three lanes just creates a suicide lane like they’re trying to do on outer Lisbon Street.
And it’s not just Route 4. It’s every road in the state. How can you cause an SUV to roll two times by hitting the curb on Canal Street, doing the speed limit of 25? You can’t.
Just enforce the law.
