In reading Mr. Beauchesne’s letter to the editor (May 20), I noticed a statement concerning the “once disputed link” between al-Qaida and Iraq. The dispute, now settled, was about a link between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaida. All subsequent investigations have disproved the link. The camp in northern Iraq was in an area beyond Saddam’s control and not connected to him. The only “link” between al-Qaida and Iraq is the present one created by the policies of the Bush administration.
Our inability to control the borders, citizens and security of Iraq is the root cause of the “link.” As controls were weakened, the whole country became a terrorist’s dream with targets galore in the form of foreigners with great exposure and an increasingly resentful populace.
As for Bush bashing, he gives loads of people, including many conservatives and moderates, plenty to be upset about.
