I disagreed strongly with the letter “Leaadership,” (March 25).

We all know that Saddam has weapons of mass destruction. We also know that he will more than likely use them when he feels threatened enough.

I don’t think our military would lead a suicide mission. We have confidence for a reason. Our mission to disarm Iraq of its weapons of mass destruction is clear; we are a peace keeping country that values national and world security.

I don’t want war just as much as anyone else, but the fact of the matter is that we are already there fighting and we’re not leaving until its resolved.

I’m sure our men and women want to be home with their friends and loved ones and it is already difficult enough for them to be over there. I hope that everyone there executes their missions with precision and success for the sake of ending this war as soon as possible.

Protesting this war to try to catch the government’s attention, or for the sole reason of voicing opinion, reflects unkindly on our service people who, more than likely, feel the same as you and I.

I wouldn’t want to hear of citizens from my own country being unsupportive toward risking my life to do a job I was ordered to do for them.

It’s time to forget about the Bush-Gore election. I voted for Gore but it’s time to focus on supporting our troops and their safe return home.

Charles W. Smith, Sabattus
