The purpose of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights proposal is to limit spending by state and local governments. It does not appear to do anything to decrease the current tax burden of the various taxes that we now pay.
Property taxes are the primary concern of many taxpayers. Some Auburn and Lewiston property owners have seen their taxes double or triple due to recent revaluations. Property owners in other areas may see similar increases as more revaluations are performed. TABOR will not decrease this tax. TABOR would not have prevented the increases that occurred in Auburn and Lewiston.
In order to control property tax increases, a new system must be devised to directly control the rate of increase of this particular tax. The system must be revised to provide a more fair and equitable system of tax assessment.
TABOR will not provide this needed tax relief.
