JAY – The Jay Orioles got into the win column in Pine Tree League baseball by defeating the Bethel Athletics, 4-2.
Chris Bessey got Jay going in the bottom of first inning with solo home run to right field. Jay scored again in the second when Edwin Thompson led off with a single, went to third on an error and later scorde on Nate Fetterhoff’s sacrifice fly.
Bethel battled back in the sixth. Alex Whitney singled, reached second on an error and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Levi Brown drew a bases-loaded walk for the second run.
Thompson took the mound in the eighth for Jay and quickly found trouble, loading the bases with none out. He settled down and struck out the next three hitters to quiet the rally.
Jay got an insurance run in the eighth when Jon Laverdiere doubled and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.
For Bethel, Tim Remington and Josh Aylward each had two hits. Alex Whitney, Rosenberg, Wade Osgood and Merrill each had one. Laverdiere logged two hits for Jay, with Brian Bessey, Chris Bessey, Derek Armandi, Ed Thompson, Ryan DiPompo, Greg Conley and Jim Flagg each adding one.
Chris Bessey got the win, pitching seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out four. Thompson pitched the last two innings for the save, striking out three.
Green Wave 15, Dodgers 11
LITCHFIELD – The Central Maine Green Wave took a huge early lead over the Downeast Dodgers and held on for a 15-11 PTL baseball victory.
The Green Wave enjoyed a 15-3 advantage until the sixth inning, when the Dodgers reached Green Wave relief pitcher John Durrell for seven runs. Four walks, two hit batters and three hits were a factor. This was accompanied by several errors in a two-inning stretch.
Rick Doble earned the winm for Central Maine, which pounded out 22 hits. Shane Kibler was 4-for-5. Andy Oliver went 3-for-5, with Joel Fernald and Durrell each 2-for-3. Harry Dwyer had three hits for the Dodgers, while the father-and-sons combination of Bill, Max and Roy Arsenault banged out two hits apiece.
The Green Wave travel to the Dixfield Diamondbacks on Sunday, while the Downeast Dodgers visit the Rumford Cardinals at Hosmer Field.
D-Backs 4, Westies 3
DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Diamondbacks scored the winning run on an interference call during a rundown after a botched suicide squeeze bunt attempt, turning back West Paris, 4-3, in PTL baseball.
West Paris’ Brian Cox and Dixfield’s Tony Umbro locked up in a scoreless pitchers’ duel for four innings. Dixfield opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, when Hart Daley plated Dave LaFleur with an RBI single.
The score remained 1-0 until West Paris scored three runs in the top of the seventh off reliever LaFleur. With two outs, Cox singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an opposite-field single by Kyle Keniston. Another run scored on two errors sandwiched around a walk, with the third run scoring on a Wes Smith single.
Dixfield tied it up 3-3 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by LaFleur and Adam Guildford.
The go-ahead run scored in the home half of the eighth when Derek Daley walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and survived the rundown.
Umbro pitched well for Dixfield, throwing six scoreless innings.
Lafleur got the win, with Reggie Weston coming on in the ninth to earn the save.
White Sox 6, Cardinals 5
Mark Gosselin picked up the win on the hill for the White Sox in a 6-5 PTL triumph over the Rumford Cardinals.
Mike Hlister was perfect at the plate with two hits and two walks for the White Sox. Wacenske and Cheetham also were repeat hitters.
