WINTHROP – The Winthrop Red Sox sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning Sunday, scoring eight runs en route to a 10-0 victory in the first game of a Pine Tree Baseball League doubleheader against the Fairfield Rockies. They rallied for a 9-8 triumph in the nightcap.

Winthrop rode a strong pitching performance by Torey Carr in the opening contest. Carr tossed a four-hit shutout. Eric Palleschi led the offense with two doubles and a single. John Bourque added two singles and a double. Randy Brodeur collected two singles for the Rockies.

Winthrop’s lead was 6-2 in the finale before Fairfield scored six runs in the bottom of the fifthinning to take a 8-6 lead. The Red Sox rallied in the top of the seventhh on a Jim Morris single followed by an RBI triple by Mike House, who then scored the tying run on a passed ball to send the game into extra innings.

In the eighth,Winthrop’s Matt Richardson led off with a sharp single to left. After Brett Witherell was hit by a pitch, Bob Cochran sacrificed the runners ahead 90 feet, setting the stage for Josh Nichols’ game-winning RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Dan Dax led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield hit, but pitcher Jim Morris retired the next three batters to seal the victory. Repeat hitters for Winthrop were Richardson, Morris, Matt McCarthy and Ian McCarthy. Pierce, Perrault, Troy Scott and Brodeur repeated for the Rockies.
