Telstar coach Jim Lunney was making one last mad dash out the door Friday prior to his team’s trip to Brewer.
His Rebels had planed to travel East in advance of their scheduled Class C state championship softball game with Calais at noon Saturday.
Those plans came to a halt early Friday afternoon when the game was rescheduled for Monday. The conditions at Coffin Field at Brewer High School have so deteriorated because of rain that the game was postponed.
Telstar will now play Calais at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.
“We’d rather play tomorrow,” said Lunney. “We wish it was at a college field. They’re going to play at St. Joe’s tomorrow unless there are torrential rains.”
The C softball game was just one of the changes made by the Maine Principal’s Association Friday.
The Class A softball game between Skowhegan and Scarborough has also been rescheduled for Monday. A site and time has yet to be determined.
The Class A baseball game between Cony and Deering has been switched to Mahaney Diamond at the University of Maine in Orono and will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The C baseball game between St. Dom’s and George Stevens Academy at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor is still on as originally scheduled. The B and D baseball and softball games scheduled at St. Joseph’s College are also hoping to play as planned.
“If it doesn’t stop raining, we’ll probably have more (changes) tomorrow,” said Jeff Sturgis, assistant executive director of the MPA. “The rest, we’re going to make a decision (Saturday) morning.”
When Telstar won the regional title in 2005 and was scheduled to play Central in the Class C state game in Brewer, that was washed out and the Rebels had to wait until Monday. Telstar lost that game 2-1. The Rebels won at Saint Joe’s the following year.
“I would have rather played tomorrow,” said senior third baseman Whitney Mills. “I talked to a few of the girls when we got the call. I think they would have rather played tomorrow as well. We’re all in the mindset that it won’t make a difference.”
Rather than go up the night before like the Rebels had intended, the team will travel to Brewer in the morning Monday.
“We have to wait a couple more days, which is going to be frustrating,” said senior pitcher/shortstop Candace Hall. “I think we’re still going to be excited, and we’re still going to be just as pumped as we are now.”
The Rebels won’t have much opportunity to practice or prepare. So, it leaves Telstar with a lengthy wait until the weather improves. Lunney says the postponement gets his team out of the routine of practicing and then playing.
“When we can’t practice, that’s not good, but we’ll manage,” said Lunney. “Both teams are in the same boat. It’s going to be a bit of an inconvenience. The kids are ready to play. We can’t practice today and we can’t practice Sunday. Once the game starts we’ll be fine, but it’s just the angst of having to wait.”
