LEWISTON – It was a breeze for Lewiston’s top tennis player at the MPA state singles championships on Saturday.

One day after making short work of her first-round opponent, Lewiston senior Chantalle Lavertu breezed past Emma Blakeley of Camden Hills 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 16 and Pauline Schopp of Fryeburg 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the state semifinals for the fourth consecutive season.

No. 7 seed Emilie Cloutier, a Lewiston junior, earned a berth in the quarterfinals, also, but fell there to No. 2 Kasia Jania of Scarborough. Jania’s older sister Camille earned the state singles crown last season and in 2005.

Also in the girls’ draw, Kelsey Ouellette of Winthrop managed a game off No. 1 Christine Ordway, but fell in straight sets. In the day’s lone upset, all be it a minor one, No. 5 Annie Criscione of Falmouth upended No. 4 Kelsey Boyce of Morse.

On the boys’ side, the upset hit a bit closer to home.

No. 3 seed Mike Butler of Lewiston, a senior, fell in his final attempt at a single crown to unseeded Nick Tollman of Scarborough in the round of 16, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

“He just outlasted him,” Lewiston coach Ron Chicoine said. “He kept receiving, and just getting the ball back, waiting for Mike to make the errors.”

Lewiston-bread Waynflete stars Brandon Thompson and Devin Van Dyke ended Saturday with mixed results. Thompson, the No. 2 seed behind Mt. Ararat’s Mike Hill, defeated Janis Schafer of Old Town 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinal round to reach Monday’s semifinals, while Van Dyke, seeded fifth, lost in the quarters to No. 4 Joaquin Perez-Marsa of Medomak Valley, 6-1, 6-2.

Perez-Marsa draws Hill in the semifinals, while Thompson will face No. 6 Tom Dillman of Greely, who ousted Tollman.

Lavertu, meanwhile, will face Jania in her semifinal, while Ordway will draw Criscione.

The semifinal round begins Monday morning at Bates College’s Wallach Tennis Complex at 9 a.m.
