AUGUSTA – Wednesday was a day to see how the Edward Little softball team measured up.

Taking on one of the KVAC’s top squads, the Red Eddies got a chance to see how close they could come against one of the favorites in Eastern A.

EL also saw how far away it is in a 12-4 loss against the unbeaten Rams.

“It was 12-4, but I feel like we can compete with anyone,” said EL coach Elaine Keene. “Before today there were two undefeated teams in our league, and they were one of them. I thought we were right there except for one inning. I feel like if we had come defensively ready to make all the plays, that could have been a 3-2 or a 6-5 game.”

EL (2-2) was plagued by five errors and whenever the Red Eddies made mistakes in the field, Cony capitalized. The Rams opened up a 5-2 lead in the third with four runs, and then broke open a 5-4 game with six runs on eight hits and two EL errors in the sixth.

“Monday’s game, defensively, we were outstanding and offensively, we were a little shaky,” said Keene, whose team struck out 12 times in a loss to Leavitt on Monday. “Today, it was the other way around. They’re a semifinal team from a year ago that didn’t lose anybody. They’re a great team, but we’re a very good team. When we put the two together, we can do some damage. They’ve got to come to be ready. I think they’re starting to realize that.”

Nicole Rugan led Cony (4-0) with three hits and four RBI. Chelsea Soule and Amy Jones added a pair of hits for the Rams, which produced 13 hits.

“We definitely came together as a team,” said Rugan. “We’ve had a couple rough games. We were playing like a team, but it wasn’t Cony softball. Today, was definitely our day.”

Cony’s pitching tandem of Jasmin Trott and Mika Wilson held EL to nine hits. Trott allowed two runs and three hits in four innings. Wilson finished the game, allowing two runs and six hits.

“It gives them different angles and it mixes things up a bit,” said Cony coach Rocky Gaslin of his two senior hurlers. “Both are very good pitchers. I’m very confident with them. They both throw strikes, and mix pitches well.

EL got two hits and three RBI from Megan Hussar while Alyssa Levesque, Miranda Martin and Emily Johnson each had two hits. Johnson also had an outstanding diving catch in right field that saved an extra-base hit and multiple runs.

After Cony took a 1-0 lead in the second on a Sara Nims RBI triple, EL took the lead in the third. Hussar doubled in Grund and Levesque for the lead. The Rams answered right back with four runs on one hit and two EL errors. The Rams got runs on a fielder’s choice, a squeeze bunt, an error and an RBI single by Rugan for the 5-2 lead.

“I think it just fired us up,” said Rugan. “We knew we needed to get back out there and swing the bats like we knew we could.”

EL got within 5-4 in the top of the fifth. Hussar singled in Martin and Johnson singled in Grund. Cony got a Rugan fielder’s choice RBI in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4. Then in the sixth, the Rams broke it open as EL committed two early errors and struggled to get outs. The Rams produced eight hits and sent 12 batters to the plate.

“We were down 5-2 and came back to make it 5-4,” said Keene. “They’re battling, and that’s all we ask them to do.”
