LEWISTON – Josh Mackey had three hits, including a solo home run to right field, and scored three runs to help Southern Maine to a 5-3 triumph over Bates in a collegiate baseball game Wednesday.
Bates built a 3-0 lead by the third inning against the top-ranked Division III baseball team in New England and third-ranked team in the country. The Huskies tied it with three runs in the fourth and went ahead in the fifth on Ryan Pike’s RBI single.
Mackey’s homer helped cinch the win.
Nick Hahn came on in relief of USM started Josh Jillson in the fourth inning and earned the win to raise his record to 5-0. Karl Alexander accepted the loss after holding the Huskies scoreless through three innings.
Anthony D’Alfonso and Anthony Pisani each had two hits apiece for the Huskies (29-3). For Bates, Chris Burke had three of the Bobcats (8-16) six hits, while Kelvin Guiterrez drove in two runs on his third inning double.
Thomas sweeps UMF
FARMINGTON – Thomas College swept both ends of a doubleheader against Maine-Farmington, 8-0 and 5-2.
In Game 1, Chris Farrar hurled a one-hitter. Farrar walked one, hit a batter and struck out three. Jared Fieldsend singled, doubled and drove in a pair of runs for the Terriers (5-23), while Kyle Gallant stroked two singles and a double. Dana Leland also contributed with a solo home run. Half of Thomas’ runs were scored off UMF errors.
In the nightcap, a defensive gem by leftfielder Tom Cameron followed by a three-run fifth inning helped the Terriers grab a 5-2 victory. Leading 2-1 in the fourth, the Beavers (4-12) were threatening to pad the advantage with two on when Josh Garneau slammed a drive to left field. Cameron hauled in the would-be home run at the fence to snuff out the rally. In the subsequent frame, Thomas scored three runs on five hits and an error to take a 4-2 lead.

UMF, Thomas split
FARMINGTON – Thomas College snuck past the University of Maine at Farmington 1-0 in the opener, while UMF fouight back for a 2-0 triumph in the nightcap
In the first game, Jennifer Higgins singled home Ali Kriegel in the fourth inning to lift the Terriers. Higgins finished with a pair of base hits. Jordan Kennedy earned the win with six hits, two walks, and 13 strikeouts.
Mckell Barnes singled twice and drove in a run to help the Beavers win the second matchup. Barnes’ RBI single gave UMF a 1-0 lead in the third inning and Casandra Dyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning for an insurance run.
Chelsea Cozzolino singled twice, while Liz Bergeron registered the win tossing a five-hitter, with five walks, and five K’s in the game.
