LEWISTON – It’s been known as a venue for concerts, boxing, professional wrestling and recreational sports, but Lewiston Armory traces its entertainment roots to high school basketball.
That dormant tradition roars to life this weekend when the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame hosts a preseason high school hoop tournament at the venerable venue.
Organized by local teacher, broadcaster and now author Bim Gibson, the tournament and sales of Gibson’s new book, “History of Edward Little/Lewiston Basketball,” will benefit the hall of fame’s endowment fund.
Six contests are on the schedule for both days, beginning at noon Friday with a Futures Game between the EL and Lewiston junior varsity girls. The boys’ JV game follows at 1:30 p.m. Next up at 3 p.m. are varsity girls’ games between St. Dom’s and Mountain Valley and EL and Falmouth. Then it’s a boys’ doubleheader at 6, featuring EL-Westbrook and Lewiston-Dirigo.
Alumni games start the slate at noon Saturday. St. Dom’s and Falmouth girls meet at 3, followed by EL and Mountain Valley. Lewiston and Westbrook begin the boys’ session at 6, with EL and Dirigo wrapping up the night.
All eight high school teams qualified for the tournament last season. The Edward Little boys were selected No. 1 in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll.
Dirigo is led by Tom Knight, a 6-foot-9 forward who accepted a basketball scholarship to Notre Dame earlier this month.
Lewiston Armory was a longtime host of state tournament action. The first basketball game ever played in the building was a Lewiston-EL clash in 1925.
