Sudden Appeal
Sudden death overtime isn’t what it used to be.
The Livermore Falls boys’ soccer team watched an apparent overtime victory slip away in the season opener when the two officials failed to end the game after the Andies scored in overtime. The Andies are now appealing what ended in a 3-3 tie with Dirigo.
“That’s a win,” said Livermore coach Larry Thornton. “We should have had it. This is clear cut. It’s not a question about time on the clock or a disputed call. It was a clear violation of the rules.”
Livermore Falls will have its case heard Thursday at the Maine Principal Association’s Interscholastic Management Committee meeting.
The Andies thought it had beaten Dirigo 3-2 in the season opener. Khyle Whittemore scored with 25 seconds left in the second overtime. However, the officials didn’t end the game, contrary to overtime rules that states the game ends with the first goal scored in overtime. Play was continued until the second five-minute overtime session was completed. Dirigo managed to get a goal from Tyler Gates with 1.6 seconds left to tie it.
Livermore Falls was told it couldn’t appeal the outcome of a completed game. Principal Shawn Lambert wrote to the MPA and requested that the issue be reviewed by the Interscholastic Managment Committee.
“You can’t appeal a game once it is done,” said Livermore Falls athletic director Sally Boivin. “It is done. That’s the ruling. They can decide whether to overturn that or not.”
The win could be important for the Andies in a close field of Western C tournament teams. Every point could matter down the stretch in regard to playoff positioning.
Tougher challenge
One of the games that set the tone for the Edward Little boys’ early was a 2-0 win over Mt. Ararat. Now the Red Eddies get a rematch with the Eagles in Topsham. EL coach Dave Morin expectes a stiffer challenge against the Eagles, which were disappointed with their effort against EL in Auburn.
Mt. Ararat watched the Red Eddies seize control of the first meeting early and rode their solid defensive play to the victory.
“We were aggressive enough on defense that we didn’t allow any second shots,” said Morin. “They didn’t tee it up to get any great shots on net.”
The Saturday games are part of a key EL-Mt. Ararat doubleheader. The girls’ play at 11:30 and the boys at 1:30. The EL girls lost to Mt. Ararat in the first meeting.
