CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Bob Darling of Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn shot a 4-under par 68 on Wednesday to claim his fifth State of Maine Championship at Sugarloaf Golf Club, finishing at 4 under par for the tournament.
Darling recorded four birdies and no bogies on the day in shooting the low round of the tournament. Last year’s champion John Hickson finished third after a final round 71 left him at even par for the championship.
Cape Elizabeth’s Mike Worroll shot a second day 69 to finish alone in second place at 2 under.
The State of Maine Championship matches up Maine’s best professional and amateur golfers in junior, senior, and 18-50 year-old categories. Darling takes home $2,200 in prize money for earning top honors, Worroll earns $1,600 in second place, and Hickson, in third place, earns $1,250.
Four time State of Maine champion Mark Plummer was the top amateur in the tournament and tied for ninth overall after a two day score of 6 over par. Shawn Keenan was second in the amateur division at 7 over par.
Dave Shorty finished third at 8 over.
Fennessy drops to fourth
NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. – First-round leader Keegan Fennessy fell out of the lead and trailed by two shots when play was suspended Wednesday during the second round at the New England Amateur Championship.
The Poland High School graduate, who opened with a 4-under 66 Tuesday, sits in fourth place at 2-under-par, two strokes behind leader David McAndrew of Barrington, R.I.
Fennessy was 2 over for the day after 15 holes when play was called for darkness. Playing the back-nine first, Fennessy suffered a double bogey on his seventh hole (the par-5 No. 16). He settled down after the double bogey with a string of seven pars and a birdie on his next eight holes before his round was suspended.
Play was delayed twice Wednesday for thunderstorms.
When the second round is completed Thursday, the low 40 players and ties will play a third round.
Players were scheduled to play 36 holes Thursday, but organizers cut the tournament to 54 holes because of the weather.
