Doctor, Doctor, gimmee the news

Just when Oxford Hills thought it was getting healthy again, the Vikings are battling even more injuries. Against Edward Little Tuesday, center Megan Joyce suffered a back injury and guard Lindsay Fox had a concussion. Oxford Hills was already missing forward Kyla Martin and guard Emmylou Blake to injuries.

“We’re hoping we can get some kids healthy because the tournament’s right around the corner,” said Oxford Hills coach Nate Pelletier, whose club started the year with three regulars out of the lineup. “Hopefully, they can recover quickly.”

Martin is expected to return tonight against Cony, a rematch of a win in which the Vikings ended the Rams lengthy home winning streak. Blake, who was hurt in a collision against Brunswick, was expected to learn more about her status Thursday. Fox and Joyce will likely miss a couple weeks. The hope is that they’ll be ready by the postseason.

“Our prayers are with Fox and Joyce,” said EL coach Craig Jipson. “They’re great players. Fox is probably one of the more under-rated kids in our league. She does all the little things, and Megan is one of the top post players in our league.”

Blow the whistle on cancer

Basketball officials around the country are using blue (boys’ games) or pink (girls’ games) whistles to help raise awareness for cancer this week. Tuesday in Madison, the three officials , Dick Dwyer, Scott Gurney and Randy Caswell, used green whistle in support of Bulldogs long-time coach Al Veneziano, who is currently battling cancer. All three officials, who donated part of their game fees to fighting cancer, received a standing ovation. It wasn’t the only thunderous applause in the gym that night. Center Margo Russell scored her 1,000th point in the win over Carrabec.
