BATH – The number in the left-hand column of Morse’s roster, 40, is Darrus Grate’s jersey number, and it was a number the Leavitt Hornets saw running away from them a lot Saturday afternoon.

The number in the right-hand column, the 12 representing Grate’s grade, is at least of some consolation to the Hornets, who certainly won’t be sorry to see the speedy tailback go.

A year after tearing up Leavitt for 203 yards and four touchdowns, Grate racked up 293 yards and all five Morse TDs on 24 carries as the Shipbuilders celebrated homecoming with a 33-6 win at McMann Field on a June-like Saturday.

Grate found the end zone the first two times he touched the ball, going 66 yards on the game’s first play, then again 68 yards on the exact same play, a toss to the left, as Morse busted out to a 13-0 lead just over three minutes into the game.

“My team pumped me up in the beginning. This is our first Homecoming win for us, so we definitely bonded today,” Grate said. “My linemen make the holes and I just run.”

Grate’s line dominated all day, and Logan Russell (five carries, 66 yards) and Drew Wallace (six carries, 37 yards) were the other beneficiaries as the Shipbuilders (5-1) gained 385 yards on the ground and 453 overall.

“(Grate) hits the hole quick and he’s always a threat to cut back or bounce things out and just sees the field well,” Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway said. “He’s a good back, but I think a lot of it, too, is the way Morse blocked today. I thought they were more physical than we were.”

Leavitt (4-2) could have made a game of it if it had finished off its first three drives, which stalled inside the Morse 10. The first foray halted at the 4, when Ryan Chaney intercepted Evan Barker at the goal-line. On their next drive, the Hornets tried a trick play, a pass by split end Ryan Labbe, on fourth down from the 7, but that was picked off by Alex Kee. Their next possession died at the 8 when Kee tackled Tyler Green (16 carries, 80 yards) on 4th-and-goal.

“We didn’t finish off our three drives. We had plenty of chances to score,” Hathaway said. “We knew they were going to score, but we knew we needed to make them drive the field and we didn’t really do that early on. We didn’t tackle well and we didn’t defeat blocks real well.”

“They marched the ball right down the field on their first three possessions, but to hold them three times inside the 10 was critical at the start of this game,” Morse coach Jason Libby said.

Grate put the Shipbuilders up 19-0 at the half with a 57-yard TD run. He added runs of four and 22 yards for scores in the second half. Barker spoiled the shutout with a one-yard TD plunge with 4:50 left in the game.
