It’s over.

Finally.

The Lewiston Maineiacs’ five-game losing streak ended Saturday, thanks to some timely goaltending and the return to the scoresheet of one Stefan Chaput.

Chaput picked up a pass from Matt Bourdeau in the center zone, skated into the Halifax zone and beat Pier-Olivier Pelletier with a wrist shot to lift the visiting Maineiacs to a 2-1 win over the Mooseheads at the Halifax Metro Centre.

“It’s nice to win,” Maineiacs’ Head Coach Ed Harding said.

“It’s two points on the road, in a tough place to play. I’m very proud of the guys, the way they battled. We played six periods against Halifax this weekend, and we battled hard in all six periods.”

The win is the Maineiacs’ first since opening night, and lifts the team’s record on the young season to 2-5.

Peter Delmas, who complained last weekend of fatigue after suffering a minor injury in the team’s second game of a three-game road trip, looked fine this weekend, stopping 36 shots in a 3-2 loss on Friday before making 29 saves on 30 shots Saturday in the win.

The defense, which had been porous in recent road games, tightened things up Saturday, thanks in large part to the play of veteran blueliner Kevin Marshall.

“I really ripped him bad, among our team, in the last week,” Harding said. “He’s really stepped up to the plate, and he’s been leading the way.”

Of course, having Chaput back in the lineup didn’t hurt, either.

“I’d probably go out on a limb and say he is the best skater in this league,” Harding said. “You throw a kid in there who can really go, who’s very strong on his skates, and it helps. And he’s really shown me some leadership qualities this week, as well. He was able to inject some confidence into the locker room.”

The Maineiacs got on the board first, just 29 seconds into the second period after a scoreless first, when Jakub Bundil redirected a perfect feed from Alex Beaton past Pelletier on the power play.

“It was something we designed in the locker room between the first and second period,” Harding said. “Sometimes things don’t work out like that, but that one worked perfectly.”

The Mooseheads tied it up just past the midway point of the period on a P.J. Corsi strike, his third of the year.

“I called another timeout in the second period,” Harding said. “We were letting things slip away. There were five minutes left, and I didn’t know if we could make the five minutes.”

The team responded to Harding’s timeout, and Chaput netted the winner just minutes later.

The Maineiacs begin a lengthy homestand with games this weekend against St. John’s (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Moncton (Sunday, 4 p.m.).
