BETHEL – When Frankie Delduca saw a window of opportunity open, the junior striker hopped right in and scored the game-winning goal with 3:38 remaining the second overtime.

Delduca’s last-minute heroics gave Telstar a 2-1 upset win over Livermore Falls in a Mountain Valley Conference boys’ soccer game Tuesday.

There was plenty on the line in this matchup. The Andies were ranked sixth and Telstar eighth in the latest Heal points. The Rebels earned a wealth of points in their victory as both teams go to 6-3 on the season.

“Speed kills, and we wanted to use it,” Telstar coach Tim Remington said. “That was our strategy in the second overtime. We wanted to hit the ball up the field to the corners and cross it over.”

Chris Schwarz had rushed up the right side and drew the Livermore Falls sweeper Garrett Therrien over. Schwarz alertly sent a crossing pass to Bryce Walker, who tapped the ball forward on the left side. Delduca was the recipient and booted the ball past Andies goalie Willie Brown.

“We wanted to keep the energy level up,” Delduca said. “Livermore is a well coached team, but we also have a good one, and he made (adjustments). On the scoring play, I actually was in the right place, and the ball bounced at my feet. Chris and Bryce actually did all the work bringing the ball up the field.”

The Andies had grabbed a 1-0 lead when Jake Marceau scored on a penalty shot that eluded the outstretched arms of Telstar goalie Dan Vaughn. A foul had been called after Matt Cotnior rushed in to the circle and was tackled at 3:38 into the second half.

Livermore Falls had several quality rushes from Tom Ventrella, Trevor Timberlake and Cotnoir but were unable to get past Telstar defenders Paul Saucier, James Kimball and Joe Fournier.

“We can’t finish,” Livermore Falls coach Larry Thornton said. “That has been the story for us the past four games. In overtime, we tried to get the ball into the corner.”

Telstar tied the game on a beautiful give-and-go sequence with Schwarz scoring at 28:44. Delduca had rushed past Therrien at mid-field and two passes later found Schwarz on the right post.

“I didn’t want the heat to be an excuse,” Remington said. “It had hurt us in a game against Lisbon. But today I told them that it was going to be just as hot for Livermore Falls, and we don’t have as much depth on the front line.”
