PORTLAND – This time, the magic didn’t go the Saints way.

After pulling off the upset of top-seeded Georges Valley in a scoreless quarterfinal matchup decided by penalty kicks, No. 8 St. Dom’s couldn’t even the score to reach extra time against No. 4 Waynflete, coming out on the losing end of 1-0 defeat in the semifinals.

Freshman midfielder Sasha Timpson headed in a corner kick by Morgan Woodhouse to ripple the net in the 43rd minute. The perfectly executed play paid off after a series of missed opportunities in the first half for the Flyers (13-2-1).

“We knew going into the match that this was the type of match that it was going to be. Defensively, they were going to be very committed to getting back,” said Waynflete coach Jonathan Shardlow. “Coming out of the first half, we knew that we had the flow of play. It was just a matter of capitalizing.”

Goalkeeper Mary Hewey turned back five shots to record the shutout in the Waynflete goal.

“We knew that we really did have to score first, because they have a great goal keeper, a very good defense, and they can just pack it in,” said Hewey. “We got that goal a little later than we wanted, but better late than never.”

Waynflete made St. Dom’s defense work in the first half, moving the ball down into the corners of the Saints’ zone and turning it back in front of the net with some dangerous centering passes. Despite a bevy of chances by Alex and Morgan Woodhouse and Mariam Quazi, the Flyers couldn’t break through. Nearly as many Waynflete chances went over the crossbar or sailed wide of the goal posts as made it through to St Dom’s keeper Elise Applegate. She was up to the challenge, making tough saves to turn aside seven shots in the first half. Applegate finished with 11 saves.

The Saints had their best chances right out of the gate in the second half. Jessica Chamberlain got behind the defense on a pass from Katelyn Bermudez, and unloaded a shot from the left side of the net that Hewey gloved. Chamberlain had another shot from the same spot about a minute later on a give-and-go with Bermudez that Hewey had a hard time holding on to.

“It got your nerves going, but that’s what makes the game fun,” said Hewey.

The Saints had one last opportunity after Timpson’s goal, when Heidi DeHaan raced onto a long, rolling pass from Ali Desjardin and got there just as Hewey slid in to grab the ball. The ball popped out to Emily St. Pierre, who was fouled, giving St. Dom’s a direct kick from the top of the 18. Abigail Gilbert’s drive bounced off the wall of defenders, though, and was cleared away.

“We’ve definitely played our share of close games,” said Gilbert. “We expected this one to be close, but we were hoping that we could put it away.”
