LEWISTON – It’s not often that 17-year-old Quebec Remparts’ phenom Angelo Esposito will miss the net on a breakaway.
Then again, it’s not often that Esposito has to face Lewiston Maineiacs’ netminder and NHL first-round pick Jonathan Bernier, either.
Bernier stared Esposito down and forced the young star to shoot wide with 3:08 to play in the second period, and Lewiston used every bit of speed and puck control it could for the rest of the game to suffocate a road-weary Quebec squad.
Eric Castonguay potted two goals and rookie David Perron had a goal and two assists to lead the Maineiacs to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Remparts in front of 2,290 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Sunday.
“If Angelo scores on that breakaway, it’s a different game,” said Remparts’ coach Patrick Roy.
“Bernier made the key saves for us to win the game tonight,” said Maineiacs’ coach Clem Jodoin. “He made the saves he had to make.”
Both of the Quebec goals came with at least one extra skater on the ice, and Brent Aubin continued his torrid scoring pace, scoring a goal and setting up another for his 13th and 14th points in his last four games.
But the Maineiacs were two goals better Sunday, getting a pair from Castonguay, who had been without a goal since the team’s first game of the season at P.E.I.
“It was two nice goals, but they were two nice passes, too,” said Castonguay. “It was a long time since the start of the season without scoring, but as long as the team keeps winning, that’s what matters.”
Perron, an 18-year-old rookie from Le Grand, Quebec, scored his sixth of the young season on a perfect feed from Sebastien Piche at 12:53 of the first period to open the scoring.
“I got a good pass from across the slot in front from Piche,” said Perron. “It was perfect and I hit a one-timer high to the blocker on the goalie.”
The Remparts scored their two – one from Aubin at 19:45 of the first on a 5-on-3 and another from Roman Bashkirov at 1:51 of the second on a 5-on-4 – to take a 2-1 lead, but an ill-timed penalty for too many men on the ice gave the home team its momentum back.
“They had a call for too many men on the ice, which I didn’t think was a good call, and it made a difference,” said Roy. “It was a 2-1 game for us at the time and it turned into a 3-2 game for (Lewiston) after that. That was the turning point in the game.”
Castonguay scored on the power play on a feed from Pierre-Luc Faubert 27 seconds into the man-advantage, and Chad Denny gave the Maineiacs the lead with a wrist shot at 8:32.
“Overall, we played a much better game, but their goalie, he played a great, great game,” said Jodoin.
Bernier held tough on Esposito’s breakaway bid late in the second, and Castonguay provided the exclamation point in the third on a nice dish from captain Marc-Andre Cliche.
“We could have scored more goals, tonight,” said Jodoin. “We are having a hard time finishing, but we are still finding ways to win hockey games.”
Lewiston will wrap up its five-game homestand Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Moncton Wildcats.
