POLAND- Brent Cary squeezed home Tyler Merchant in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Gilman Electrical a 5-4 win over Gayton in Friday’s American Legion Zone III playoff game.
Gayton starter Luke Potter walked Merchant leading off the eighth. Merchant advanced to third on an infield error before Cary laid a bunt toward third on an 0-1 count. Potter’s throw to home was not in time.
Potter paced Gayton’s hitting attack by belting a two-run homer to right in the second. The hurler was robbed of another two-run shot in the top of the eighth by centerfielder Steve Ray.
David Packard (2-0) pitched the final four innings to earn the win in relief for Gilman Electrical (13-8). Alex Smith chipped in with three hits and a pair of RBIs.
Gayton finishes the season at 6-15.
Bessey Motors 5, Gray 4
SOUTH PARIS- Chris Jennings’ two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Russell Estes with the winning run to propel Bessey Motors past Gray by a 5-4 margin in an American Legion Zone III quarterfinal playoff Friday.
Jennings drove the 0-2 offering from Jared Dunn into center and Estes easily scored from second. Bessey Motors (10-11) tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth on an infield error.
Chris Roy (2-2) pitched five innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. He was helped by a pair of Ben Goodall RBI triples while Alex Waite chipped in with a double and triple.
Gray (7-14) picked up run-scoring singles from Matt Moberg, Pete Clement and Dunn.
NAL 6, Andy Valley 3
AUBURN – Derek Doucette struck out eight in fashioning a complete-game five-hitter to help New Auburn defeat Andy Valley 6-3 in an American Legion Zone III quarterfinal victory Friday night.
Doucette (3-1) allowed all three runs in the top of the fourth as Ben Boulay ripped a two-run single.
Tim Doyle followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3, but Justin Rouillard was cut down at home trying to give Andy Valley (3-18) the lead.
New Auburn (15-6) touched Doyle for three runs in the bottom frame on an error, a hits batsman, a wild pitch and two singles.
Adam and David Lutz both contributed RBI singles for New Auburn in the first. Justin Ciszewski added a pair RBIs.
