LEWISTON – Senior forward Brooke Anable scored a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to lead Bates to a 5-0 shutout victory over Husson in non-league field hockey action Wednesday.
The Bobcats (3-4) got on the scoreboard first as sophomore Erin Chandler found the net on a feed from sophomore Caitlin Tamposi in the corner. Just 22 seconds later, Carolyn King maneuvered past two defenders on the right wing and passed to first-year Abby Childs for a quick 2-0 lead at the half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Bocchino stopped five shots for Husson, as the Bobcats outshot the Eagles (3-5) by a 29-3 margin. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Judice only needed one save to earn her first shutout of the season for Bates.
Women’s Soccer
Husson 4, Thomas 0
BANGOR – The Husson womens’ soccer team blanked Thomas College 4-0 Wednesday afternoon.
Kaylin Caron scored the first goal off a pass from Laurie Melen. The next three goals were netted uncontested in the second half by Melen, Danielle Billings, and Bonnie Dow. Keeper Leah Drew had five saves on seven shots to preserve the Husson (6-6-1, 4-2-1) shutout.
Thomas’ (5-5, 4-3) Jessie Crafthad 22 saves against 30 shots before being replaced by Shannon Proctor who had just one save.
Southern Maine 2, Bowdoin 2
BRUNSWICK – The University of Southern Maine women’s soccer team rallied twice from one-goal deficits to force a 2-2 tie against Bowdoin in collegiate women’s soccer action Wednesday. Bowdoin (6-2-1) took a lead mid-way through the opening stanza when Danielle Chagnon played a ball through the middle to Ivy Blackmore. Blackmore took a shot that went off Husky netminder Mindy Morneault and back to the foot of Blackmore, who tapped the ball into the net at 22:52.
The Huskies (8-2-1) responsed quickly, answering with a goal by Devin Edwards just four minutes later. The Polar Bears regained the lead in the second half when a well-placed goal from Ann Ziegler found the top-left cormer of the goal at 54:44, but the Huskies answered again. Samantha Rennie finished off a loose ball in the box following a corner kick to deadlock the contest at 70:56. Neither team could muster a goal in overtime.
Men’s Soccer
Husson 5, Thomas 0
BANGOR – Nataphong Kangsunja and Shane Coffin each recorded a goal and an assist as Husson rolled to a 5-0 win over Thomas in mens’ soccer action Wednesday.
Coffin would get the Eagles on board 20 mintues into the game off a thow-in on the right side. Ryan Conrad, Kyle James, and Chris Cacela each added a goal for the Husson (8-4-2, 4-2-1) win.
Dana Bellemare was the winning keeper having only one save against one shot.
Maine 1, UNH 1
ORONO – The Maine men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the University of New Hampshire Wednesday. UNH jumped out to a early lead at the 28:32 mark of the first half when Chris Bennice headed a cross from Matt Shump. Adam Chenault tied the game up for the Black Bears (2-6-2) 14 minutes into the second half with an assist from Dimitri Anastasiou.
New Hampshire held a slight advantage in shots on goal at 14-12, yet failed to find the back of the net during the overtime period. Chad Mongeon made six saves in net for Maine, while Brain Levey turned back four shots for the Wildcats (7-2-2).
