KINGSTON, R.I. – Jason McLaughlin was credited with a goal and an assist to lead University of Alabama-Birmingham to a 3-1 win over Maine in the second round the URI/Sheraton Men’s Soccer Classic on Sunday.
The Blazers struck first at 1:26 into the game when Leandro de Oliveira redirected a pass from McLaughlin into the Maine net. The Black Bears followed up with their only score of the game seven minutes later when Kevin Forgett drilled a bicycle-kick goal past UAB goalie A.J. Robles to tie the score at one.
Shane Elsner broke the tie when he found the back of the Maine net with less then two minutes left in the first half. The game remained 2-1 until McLaughlin scored the final goal of the contest 7:32 into the second half.
The win improved UAB to a 2-0 in the tournament, and they were declared the tournament champion. Maine finishes the tournament with an 0-2 record.
Keene State 4, Husson 0
KEENE, N.H. – Caleb Patterson and Eric Scott each scored a goal and an assist for Keene State as it shutout Husson 4-0 Sunday afternoon in Game 2 of the Diadora-Dunkin Donuts Soccer Showdown on Sunday.
Mike Cooley and Collin Bailey each scored once as well as Keene dominated play, outshooting the Braves 24-2. Cal Mintz made just one save for Keene. Chris Jackson, keeper for Husson, finished the afternoon with four saves, but took the loss.
Earlier in the day New England College was shutout by Western New England 5-0 in the opening game of the tournament.
Women’s soccer
Maine 3, Central Conn. State 0
BOSTON -Brittany Saisselin scored a goal and had an assist as Maine downed Central Connecticut State 3-0 in women’s soccer on Sunday afternoon.
Linda Concolante and Shelby Pickering added a goal apiece for the Black Bears.
Jasmine Phillips got the win in net for Maine, which improves to 2-2 on the young season. Central Connecticut goaltender Erin Herd had two saves on the day.
