LEWISTON – Jennifer “Jay” Hartshorn was named women’s cross coutry and track cach at Bates College.

Hartshorm, who was an assistant coach at Syracuse, replaces interim coach Sally Hirsch, who filled in after the retirement of long-time coach Carolyn Court.

Hartshorn has been employed since 2001 at Syracuse University as the top assistant in the track and field program, coaching the cross country teams and working closely with head coach Andy Roberts in the indoor and outdoor track and field.

Hartshorn recently returned from coaching at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships held in Canada on July 29-31. The Colby graduate holds U.S.A. Track and Field Levels I and II certifications.

Hartshorn will join the staff at the end of August.

Hebron hires hockey coach

HEBRON – Robert Gagnon was named hockey coach and admissions counselor at Hebron Academy.

Gagnon will also reside in Sturtevant Home, Hebron’s dorm for boys in grades 10-12 and postgraduates. He brings a rich background in competitive hockey, coaching, and executive recruiting, as well as personal experience with boarding school life.

Gagnon began coaching as a part-time assistant for his alma mater, Avon Old Farms, while also coaching the New England Nighthawks, a pee-wee all-star team. Most recently, he was coach at Conrad High School in West Hartford, Conn., and coach for the Northern Connecticut Wings, a midget/junior hockey program.
