WATERVILLE – Mike Kinsman struck out five and pitched a complete game in leading Bates College to a 2-1 victory over winless Colby College in NESCAC baseball action Wednesday.
The Bobcats (11-14) scored single runs in the second and third innings. Rob Schuler walked in the second inning, moved to third on a double by Kyohei Tamada and scored on a passed ball.
In the third inning, Alex Maulucci was hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pitch and scored the eventual game-winner on an RBI single by Nate Reid. Kinsman, now 5-1 on the season, had a perfect game through six innings before Brian Liberty singled to start the seventh for the Mules (0-27).
Bowdoin 4, Thomas 3
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College closed out their two-game set with Thomas College, taking a 4-3 win.
Chris McCann doubled and was driven in by a sharp single courtesy of Nick Lawler to give the Polar Bears (18-14) a 1-0 lead in the first.
Thomas (10-20) evened the score in the top of the second when Brandon Connors hit a long home run to left, but Bowdoin responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame.
A Mike Buckley grounder scored Pat Duchette before a sacrifice fly from McCann plated Chris Bucci to give Bowdoin a 3-1 edge.
Thomas managed to tie the score after single runs in the fourth and fifth.
Scott Brawn hit a homer in the fourth and then singled home Jordan Stebbins in the next inning.
Southern Maine 5, UMass-Boston 2
BOSTON – Sophomore lefthander Peter Bergeron fired a 2-hit complete game performance to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 5-2 win over the University of Massachusetts Boston in LEC action Wednesday.
The Huskies ( 22-11) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from senior outfielder Brandon Brewer.
The Beacons (13-16) tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but Southen Maine reclaimed the lead in the top of the third on a two-run home run from sophomore first baseman Max Arsenault.
In the home half of the final inning, the Beacons recorded just their second hit when senior Paul Tedesco cranked his fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the lead to 5-2. But, Bergeron fired right back, forcing a groundout and recording his seventh and eight strikeouts of the day to seal the win.
