RUMFORD – Dirigo continued on its path of destruction Wednesday night.
The Cougars came out smoking behind a huge pin by Josh Ronan at 119 pounds and preceded to extend their winning streak to six with a 48-36 triumph against rival Mountain Valley.
Dirigo (12-2) also defeated Wiscasset 45-24 in Mid State League action. Kyle Meile (152) and Devin Brann (160) led the way with first-period pins.
In the featured meet, Mountain Valley fell behind 24-6 and never recovered.
Ronan stuck Mike Gilbert in the third period. Jon Smith wrapped up Cody McPherson at 125.
“This team is really wrestling well,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said. “I challenged them the other day in practice and now it’s a pride thing for them to do better. Each class wants to do more than the others. I told them we have league and state opponents from here on out, so step it up.”
A pin by Devin Brann over Jeff Pelletier at 160 put Dirigo ahead 42-18.
A trio of injury defaults put a damper on the event. The Cougars’ Brianna Mason suffered a dislocated shoulder and was taken to the hospital.
The Falcons’ Aaron Arsenault re-injured his ribs.
Dirigo senior Randy Hall won his match when Tyler Child (back) was unable to continue at 171.
Mountain Valley (11-3) had stopped the bleeding when Zack Bradley (135) used an arm bar to stick Matt Smith.
“Dirigo came right after us,” Bradley said. “Our team is having a tough time staying focused right now with coach and Ben Madigan (neck injury) not here. It isn’t the same, but we still have time to get things going again.”
Mountain Valley coach Gary Dolloff is in a Boston hospital undergoing tests.
Dirigo also received a solid effort from Mike Jonaitis, who lost a hard-fought match to C.J. McGuire of Wiscasset. It was tied at six, but McGuire fell behind for a takedown with 27 seconds left. The Redskins Jake Wilmer won two matches at 171.
The Falcons have relied on their depth in the upper weights and that held true, again. Chris Smith (189), Brendan Bradley (215) and David Smith (275) each stuck opponents.
“Josh Ronan has been unbelievable,” coach Gilbert said. “He had lost to Mike Gilbert three times last year. Even Mike Jonaitis wrestled well, even though he lost.”
