BURLINGTON, Vt. – Taylor Coppenrath scored with 6.1 seconds to play Saturday to rally Vermont to a 67-66 victory over Maine in an America East men’s basketball game.
The Catamounts (8-3, 4-0 America East) were trailing 66-64 when T.J. Sorrentine sank a free throw with 17 seconds left. Vermont regained possession and Josh Duell’s pass found Coppenrath, who bucketed the game-winner with 6.1 seconds left.
Ernest Turner’s long 3-point attempt for Maine in the final seconds fell short, sealing the win.
Coppenrath, the nation’s leading scorer, and Sorrentine each scored 25 points. Coppenrath made just 8-of-18 from the floor, but went 9-for-10 from the line and had eight rebounds for Vermont.
Turner paced Maine (7-6, 2-2) with a game-high 28 points.
The Black Bears took a 48-37 lead with 9:37 to go, battling back from Vermont’s 30-26 halftime lead. The Catamounts responded with a 23-6 tear. Sorrentine and Josh Duell each had 3-pointers, and the Catamounts shot 8-for-10 from the line.
Sorrentine hit 5-of-11 3-pointers, and added another eight rebounds for Vermont, winners of five straight.
Maine hit 11-of-22 3s, including 6 of 10 in the second half. Kevin Reed had 13 points for Maine, including 10 in the second half. Jermaine Jackson had 10 for the Black Bears.
Bowdoin 67, Babson 62
BRUNSWICK – Mark Yakavonis scored 16 points to lead Bowdoin to a 67-62 win over Babson.
The Polar Bears (7-4) used a 32-24 second half to pull away as Kyle Petrie and Andrew Rippert chipped in with 15 and 14 points.
Babson was led by C.J. Enere with 18 points and Phil Riffe’s 16.
Colby 65, Bates 59
WATERVILLE – Patrick McGowan scored 13 points (21 overall) in the second half and went over the 1,000 point mark to lead Colby to a 65-59 win over Bates.
After the teams battled to a 30-30 halftime score, McGowan sparked the White Mules (9-2), while Andrew Jenkins and Drew Cohen added 14 and 13 points to ice the win.
The Bobcats (9-2) were led by Zak Ray with 14 points and Brian Gerrity with 12 points.
Keene State 88, USM 69
GORHAM – Erik Schlater led Keene State to an 88-69 win over the Southern Maine with a game-high 19 points.
The Owls (7-4) placed five other players in double digits, led by Adam Gervais with 16 points.
The Huskies (4-8) were led by Jesse McKinnell with 15 points. Josh Daniels and Jason Levesque added 11 and 10 points.
Husson 89, Caselton 74
CASELTON, Vt. – Buddy Leavitt drained 22 points and Tyler Munzzy added 20 points as Husson College downed Caselton State 89-74.
The Braves (5-6) built a 41-29 halftime lead and never looked back. John Galarneau torched the nets for a game-high 25 points for Caselton in the loss.
Thomas 84, Becker 64
LEICESTER, Mass. – Adam Rich banked 24 points in a balanced attack as Thomas cruised to an 84-64 victory over Becker.
James Godley contributed 19 points for Thomas (4-8). Barett Dziok had the game-high 29 points for Becker College (1-9) .
UMF 62, Elms 53
CHICOPEE, Mass. – Bobby Deetjen scored eight straight points during an 80-second span late in the second half to spark the University of Maine at Farmington to a 62-53 come-from-behind win over Elms College.
With the game tied 46-46 and 5:46 remaining, guard Kyle Seyboth stole a pass, converted a layup and the followup free throw to give the Blazers (6-4) a 49-46 lead.
However, Deetjen took over as he nailed a pair of 3-pointers and a layup in 80 seconds to give the Beavers (7-4) the lead for good at 54-49.

USM 72, Keene State 41
GORHAM – Tiffany Jones scored 17 points and Ashley marble chipped in with 13 points as Southern Maine downed Keene State 72-41.
Keene State was led by Bekka Hopkins with a team-high 13 points.
Colby 84, UMPI 40
WATERVILLE – Katie McCabe had 17 points and 10 rebounds to pace Colby College to an 84-40 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Wendy Bonner added 18 points for the White Mules (4-6). Sarah Beasley led the Owls (1-6) with 19 points.
Emmanuel 65, Bowdoin 60
BOSTON, Mass. – Alyssa McCoy drained 22 points to lead Emmanuel Cillege to a 65-60 win over previously unbeaten Bowdoin College.
The Polar Bears were the No. 1 team in the country in Division III.
The Saints (9-1) built a 32-26 lead at the end of the first half and held on to register the victory.
The Polar Bears (10-1) were led by Eileen Flaherty with 18 points while Justine Pouravelis added 12 points.
Caselton 76, Husson 74
CASELTON, Vt. – Beth Ratner and Carrie Black each scored 18 points to lift Caselton State to a 76-74 win over Husson College.
Caselton used a 42-37 second half to overcome a three point deficit as Jenn Whitting and Casey Wedge added 17 and 14 points.
The Braves (4-7) were led by Annie McIntosh and Holly Gracie, who each tallie d 16 points.
St. Joseph’s 68, St. Joseph’s (Vt) 40
STANDISH – St Joseph’s College used a balanced scoring attack led by Margaret Blauvelt with 10 points and nine rebounds to hand St. Joseph’s of Vermont a 68-40 setback in women’s basketball play.
The Monks (5-5) built a 38-14 halftime lead and never looked back as 13 of 14 players scored in the contest.
St. Joe’s (Vt) was led by Elizabeth Arbelaez with a game-high 13 points.
Thomas 66, Becker 40
LEICESTER, Mass – Tammy Fowler scored 19 points to lead Thomas College to a 66-40 win over Becker in women’s basketball Saturday.
The Terriers took a 36-14 lead into the intermission and cruised to the win as Amanda Godley and Ashley Hathaway chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectivley, in the lopsided win.
Becker was led by Jocelyn McNair (12 points) and Brittany Evans (10).
UMF 73, Elms 40
CHICOPEE, Mass – The University of Maine at Farmington used a 29-8 run in the first half, sparked by ssophomore’s Kari Simpson and Karen Sirois, who each scored 14 points, to down Elms College 73-40 in women’s hoop action Saturday evening.
The Beavers built an insurmountable 34-16 lead in the first half and continued to apply the pressure in the second half to gain the lopsided win.
Elms was led by freshman Amy Kasala who recorded her third double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Hockey
Babson 3, Colby 1
WATERVILLE – James LaFrenniere and Johnny Kim scored third period goals to lift Babson College to a 3-1 win over host Colby College in men’s hockey Saturday at Alfond Arena.
The White Mules took the early lead as Nick Bayley found the back of the net with 53 second left in the first period but it would be all they could produce as John Sterbling (20 saves) was stellar in goal for Babson.
Bowdoin 7, UMass-Boston 1
BRUNSWICK – Sophomore Bryan Ciborowski scored a pair of power-play goals to lift Bowdoin to a 7-1 win over the University of Massachusetts at Boston in men’s ice hockey action Saturday.
The Polar Bears (8-1-1) dominated the pace of play from the start, but could not find the back of the net until the 15:33 mark when Ciborowski converted a relay from Greg McConnell and Nate Riddell. Sebastian Belanger capped off the scoring with his first career tally at 18:21 of the final period.
Goalie George Papachristopoulos was solid for Bowdoin as usual, needing only 14 saves to earn the victory. James Johnson was a little more busy, making 25 stops for the Beacons (2-8-0) in the loss.
Southern Maine 8, St. Michael’s 7
BURLINGTON – Mike Stevens converted a feed from Chris Sparkes and Mark Carragher with just over a minute left in regulation to lift the University of Southern Maine to an 8-7 win over St. Michael’s College in men’s hockey action.
The Huskies Tyler Ravalo came on in relief making 19 saves to record the win.
Marc Santuccio, Carragher, Eric Kent, Brian Collins, James LeBlanc, and Sparkes each scored a goal in the win.
