RUMFORD – Six different players scored touchdowns in the first half as the Mountain Valley utilized its depth to cruise to a 54-0 win over winless Falmouth.
It was the second-straight game that the Falcons scored more that 40 points in the first half.
Mountain Valley (7-1) held Falmouth on its initial possession and then wasted little time in getting its offense in motion.
Chris Smith scored from one yard to complete a 66-yard drive. A key play was a 36-yard run by Aaron Arsenault. Ben Madigan kicked the first of his five extra points, to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead.
The defense did its job by holding the Yachtsmen to minus-30 yards in the first two quarters. Ends Pat Knapp and Chris Lever, linebacker Brandon Bradley and Thaddeus Bennett were key contributors.
“We’ll be ready for Leavitt next week,” Smith said. “We came into this game knowing that we can never underestimate an opponent. It was a second easy game in a row, but like the coaches tell us, we need to continue working hard in practice. We were 8-0 our sophomore year and Leavitt came up here and beat us.”
Quarterback Zach Fergola had a 15-yard TD run on the Falcons next drive. Mountain Valley started four drives in Falmouth territory.
Fergola (5-for-9, 67 yards) threw a 14-yard TD pass to Lever. Korey Stairs scored on a reverse after a key block by Bradley.
“Our offense works so well because everyone does their job,” Madigan said. “The linemen are getting down field and securing their blocks.”
Falmouth (0-8) was simply overwhelmed and punted after three plays and out on its first six possessions. QB Michael Simpson was constantly harassed and fullback Tony Floridino gained all 40 yards against the Falcons second defense.
Knapp broke in from two yards out and Madigan intercepted on the ensuing possession.
Arsenault (87 yards, nine rushes) ran for a 30-yard TD.
The Falcon non-starters played the entire second half. Andy Shorey threw a 54-yard TD pass to Shawn Marr. Joel Richard added a 5-yard score.
“No one wins in a situation like this,” Falcon head coach Jim Aylward said. “If the Campbell Conference wants to have a state championship team, then something needs to be done. There’s a big gap between the playoff teams and the other teams.”
