BIDDEFORD – The University of Southern Maine escaped with a 1-0 women’s soccer victory when a University of New England defender inadvertently knocked the ball into her own net Monday afternoon .

The goal came at the 37:41 mark of the first half after Kelsey Shamano served a corner kick into the area around the six-yard line. The ball deflected off a UNE (4-6) defender who was attempting to clear the ball and provided the Huskies (6-4-3) with the lone tally of the match.

USM limited the Nor’easters to just five shots, none in the opening 60 minutes of play. Keeper Marcy Ansley was credited with two saves for her fourth shutout.

Men’s soccer

Wheaton 2, Bowdoin 0

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to nine games Monday afternoon as the Lyons defeated Bowdoin College 2-0 in a rematch of the 2003 NCAA Tournament Northeast Regional semifinal.

Andrew Hench gave the Lyons (12-1-1) their best scoring opportunity 14 minutes into the contest, beating a Bowdoin defender to the left of the goal and then directing his shot over the crossbar. Colin Igoe took a cross from Hench and rifled a shot into the lower left corner of the net for an insurance goal.

Matt Pachniuk finished the contest with seven saves for the shutout, while Bowdoin (7-4) keeper Nathan Lovitz was credited with three saves. Bowdoin held a 14-11 advantage in shots, and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

USM 1, Thomas 0

WATERVILLE – University of Southern Maine’s Andy Budelman scored on a cross from Zach Rossignol seven minutes into the second half to lift USM to a 1-0 victory over Thomas College in men’s soccer Monday.

Jeff Gray turned away two shots to preserve the shutout for the Huskies (7-2-3), while Thomas College used three different keepers in the contest. Phillip Bailey, Shawn Hiller, and Ryan Conrad combined for a total of 12 saves on 19 shots in the effort.

Field hockey

USM 2, Westfield State 0

GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine scored a pair of second half goals en route to a 2-0 upset victory over Westfield State College in field hockey on Monday.

After the scoreless first half, the Huskies got on the scoreboard four minutes into the second half when Justene Larnerd netted the ball off a penalty corner. Denise Minigell finally gave USM some breathing room with 18:07 to play as she tipped home a hard drive taken from the top of the circle.

The Huskies’ (2-12, 1-5) Sadie Garnache-Poirier finished the game with five saves to post her second shutout of the season. Kendra Newell was credited with eight saves in the Owls (8-2, 4-1) losing effort.

UNE 6, Husson 2

BIDDEFORD – Ruth Ness matched her own school record by scoring three times as the University of New England defeated Husson 6-2 in field hockey action Monday.

Ness, who accomplished the feat twice last season, scored a pair of first-half goals in helping the Nor’easters establish a 4-1 advantage. Megan Sevey netted two goals and Sarah Meyer chipped in with one for the UNE (8-3) win.

Nikki Corson scored in the first half and Amy McDaniel in the second to account for the Husson (4-8) offense.

Girls’ soccer

Monmouth 2, Madison 0

MADISON – Jenn Lola scored an insurance goal with five minutes remaining in the game off a hard boot outside the 18 to secure Monmouth’s 2-0 win over Madison Monday afternoon.

Bianca Cloutier started the scoring 16 seconds into the contest after putting the ball away for the Mustangs (7-5-1). Courtney Barrett made 10 saves off of 10 shots to preserve the shutout.

Ashley Marandola turned aside 18 shots for the Bulldogs (3-10).
