The advantage the Val d’Or Foreurs had in shots by the end of their game against the Lewiston Maineiacs on Sunday nearly matched the advantage they had in penalty minutes.

Both statistics were very telling.

Vladimir Kutny had two goals and Peter-James Corsi and Olivier Latendresse had a goal and an assist each as the Foreurs broke open a close game in the third period with two more tallies and defeated the visiting Maineiacs 4-1 in front of a crowd of 1,837 at the Palais des Sports.

The loss is the second in three games for the Maineiacs (2-3-2-0), who have not won since their home-opener against the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Oct. 1. Lewiston salvaged a tie with Rouyn-Noranda on Friday, but suffered more than a blow to their collective ego as two more key players went down with injuries. Brandon Roach and Sheldon Wenzel were examined and deemed O.K. to play Sunday, but were less than 100 percent effective.

Even with the shortened bench, the Maineiacs’ forwards struck first as Eric Castonguay connected for his second unassisted goal in as many games just 6:30 into the game.

Penalties played a big role following the lone Maineiacs tally, and Val d’Or enjoyed 13 power plays, scoring twice and holding the Maineiacs without a shot for several minutes on two separate occasions.

Kutny scored his first of the game at 9:07 to knot the score and Corsi followed three minutes later to give Val d’Or the lead for good.

In the second period, neither team managed a goal, but the Foreurs spent nearly the entire second half of the middle frame on the power play, forcing rookie netminder Jonathan Bernier to work hard in his first start since Sept. 28.

With eight minutes to go in the game, Latendresse scored to widen the lead, and Kutny finished the scoring as time wound down.

Repeated attempts to reach Maineiacs’ coach Clem Jodoin after the game proved unsuccessful.

The road will not get easier for the Maineiacs on Monday, as they travel more than five hours south to face off against Western Division-leading Gatineau before returning home to face Halifax on Wednesday.
