WENHAM, Mass. – Gray native Sarah DeLuca, junior captain on the women’s basketball team at Gordon College, was honored as Co-Player of the Week in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

Last week, DeLuca averaged 18.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and three steals per game.

Included in the effort was a 24-point, eight-rebound, three-assist performance in the Fighting Scots win over Colby.

Weekend snocross canceled at Loon

LINCOLN, N.H. – Due to the lack of natural snow and insufficient time to produce enough man-made snow for an adequate track, Rock Maple Racing officials have been forced to cancel their planned season opening snocross event originally slated for Dec. 6-7 at Loon Mountain.

With the loss of the race at Loon, focus will now

shift to Haystack at Mt. Snow in Wilmington, Vt., which will now host the first

round of competition for 2003-04 on Dec. 13-14.

Haystack has been on the RMR schedule since its inception in 1992.

track captains

GORHAM – University of Southern Maine has named captains for the upcoming indoor track season.

Heading the women’s team are juniors Kim Brewer, Kristen Ingalls of Raymond and Kristen Sinclair.

Brewer is the defending New England Division III champion in the pentathalon, and won four events at last year’s Little East Conference indoor championships. Ingalls earned All-Little East honors last winter in the 55-meter hurdles.

Sinclair, an NCAA qualifier last spring in the javelin, will compete primarily in the 20-lb. weight throw and the shot put during the indoor season.

Named tri-captains of the men’s team are juniors Claton Conrad, Chris Roux and sophomore Peter Marsh.

The versatile Roux is expected to add the heptathlon to his repertoire this winter. Marsh focuses exclusively on the pole vault, where he cleared 12-9. Conrad is a distance runner, who will concentrate on the 3,000 and 5,000.

Bates hosts

Dash for Hunger

LEWISTON – The Bates College indoor track team will host the Sixth Annual Yuletide Dash for Hunger on Friday, Dec. 5 from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.

The races, for all children 12 and under, will be held at the Walter Slovenski Indoor Track in the Merrill Gymnasium.

Registration starts at 4:30 p.m. Children will have the opportunity to try different track and field events from 4:30 until 5 p.m.

After a group stretch with the Bates track team and

the Bates Bobcat, children under four will run a 60-yard race, with others running a 200-meter lap around the track.

For entry to the event, participants should bring a canned good or non-perishable food item. Food collected will be donated to the Abused Women Advocacy Group (AWAP). Ribbons will be awarded to all race participants.
