LEWISTON – The Lewiston Maineiacs pulled the trigger on a trade Sunday, sending 18-year-old goaltender Maxime Joyal to the Quebec Remparts for the rights to Derek Bailey, who had already been in camp with the Maineiacs.
“It was honestly in my mind if I wasn’t going to make the team here,” said Joyal, who appeared in three games last year for the Maineiacs. “This organization is a great organization and I am grateful that they gave me the opportunity that they did.”
The trade is confusing, since the person the Maineiacs acquired in the trade was already at camp over the weekend.
“Basically, I signed a piece of paper telling Quebec that I was going to go to their camp,” said Bailey. “I was only going to go to their camp (which starts on Monday) if I didn’t make it here.”
“It was basically a misunderstanding by both organizations,” said Maineiacs general manager and coach Clem Jodoin. “We were able to do this trade because we are very deep at goaltender, and because we like Bailey. He is a good person and a good hockey player.”
As it turned out, Bailey did make the first round of cuts with the Maineiacs, but because of his signature on Quebec’s list, the Maineiacs compensated the Remparts by sending them one of the six goalies currently in camp. Quebec has had its eye on Joyal for quite some time.
“When I was drafted last year, everyone thought I was going to Quebec,” said Joyal. “I had talked with Patrick Roy (the owner and general manager of the Remparts), but when Lewiston drafted me, everyone was confused.”
Bailey is playing hockey for the first time in three years after being what he called “burned out” at age 15.
“It just wasn’t fun for me, so I took a break,” said Bailey. “I am not so sure that I should have taken such a long break, but I am happy to be playing again.”
Prior to his time off, Bailey, a native of Plymouth, Mass., played for the Walpole Stars in Massachusetts.
