DIXFIELD – The Dirigo High School field hockey team quickly discovered its defensive game wasn’t going to work against an undefeated Winthrop team on Wednesday.

Elyse Cole and Brittany Gaudet each recorded hat tricks as the Lady Ramblers cruised to a convincing 11-0 win against Dirigo in MVC action.

Winthrop, the defending MVC champions, finished the game with a 40-1 advantage in shots and 11-2 in penalty corners.

Dirigo (0-4) goalie Danny Thompkins did make 25 saves in the game.

“They certainly have a good goalie,” Winthrop coach Sharon Coulton said. “She came out of the (crease) and made several sliding saves. That’s some thing that you don’t see to often. We played a good offensive game today and we’ll go practice Thursday to get ready for Telstar.”

Winthrop (5-0) travels to Bethel on Friday.

The Ramblers first goal came just 85 seconds into the game. Sarah Cook shot from the right side, but Thompkins stepped out for the initial save. The rebound went to Cook who banged the ball in to the cage.

Dirigo had trouble getting its offense on track. Holly Knight, Samantha Webster, Sarah Oakes and Deven Madore were constantly broken up by the Ramblers defense. The Cougars managed one shot and had two corners in the first half.

“This team is better than what we showed today,” Dirigo coach Amy Druzba said. “Danny Thompkins deserves better, but she did have some solid saves. But, you have to credit Winthrop because they are a great team and are very talented.”

Winthrop led 6-0 at halftime.

“We passed the ball well,” Coulton said. “This is a good field for carrying the ball. Dirigo had a good defense because they blocked and forced us to move the ball around.”
