RUMFORD – Mountain Valley’s confidence is running high, and so it should be.
Quarterback Zach Fergola threw two touchdown passes in the first half as the Falcons ran wild in a 45-0 shutout against Poland in a Class B Campbell Conference tilt before a huge homecoming crowd at Hosmer Field Friday night.
Mountain Valley (4-1) was overpowering as it scored on six straight possessions en route to a 38-0 halftime lead. Pat Knapp caught passes of six and 27 yards, and three rushing TDs followed in the one-sided affair. Poland gained 14 yards on its first three plays, but finished with minus 10 in the first half. The Falcons have allowed one TD in the last nine quarters.
“This is quite big for us,” Knapp said. “It was a big team effort and it shows that we’ve been working hard. We’ll carry this over to next week against Wells.”
Mountain Valley runners Jeremy Sterling scored on a five-yard run for an 18-0 lead in the first quarter. Knapp intercepted Poland quarterback Joe Douglas.
The Falcons’ Chris Smith (99 yards in two quarters) scored an 11-yard TD, and halfback Aaron Arsenault (76 yards) scored on a 27-yard run. Ben Madigan kicked his first of two point-after kicks.
“The team is playing with a lot of confidence,” Arsenault said. “In a game like this, we can see how much our hard work is paying off.”
Chris Lever, Brandon Bradley and Travis Fergola led the defense. Even though the Knights used a shotgun, the aggressive pressure was in the backfield on every snap. The Knights punted four times in 16 minutes.
On a wild play, the Falcons’ Andy Shorey plucked the ball out of the air on an attempted pitch out by Poland reserve punter Robbie Pratt and sprinted 47 yards for a TD.
Poland (2-3) received its best field position on kickoff returns by Josh Pomerleau and Stevie Ray. The first-year varsity program has now lost three straight games.
“We knew they would try passing,” Zach Fergola said. “Even though their starting QB wasn’t playing, it didn’t change our philosophy of getting in and pressuring them.”
Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward was required to play the reserves in the second half. Shorey threw a four-yard TD pass to Madigan.
