The Huskies are the only team without a loss heading into the final weekend
MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior C Pat McDonough had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 victory over the Keene State College Owls in a second round game in the 2003 Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Thursday.
The win moves Southern Maine into Friday’s 7:00 p.m. game against the winner of the day’s first elimination game between Eastern Connecticut State University and Keene State that starts at 12:00 p.m. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth will play Western Connecticut State University in another elimination game starting at 3:30 p.m.
Southern Maine jumped on Keene State sophomore starter James Slack for a pair of runs in the second inning and three more in the third to build an early 5-0 lead.
Junior Brian Marshall had three hits in the game and drove in the first run of the game with a single to center that scored senior Tyler Delorme. Three batters later, McDonough singled to right to drive home Marshall.
In the third, USM freshman Tip Fairchild of Monmouth reached Slack for an RBI single. McDonough greeted sophomore reliever Pat Austin with a single to right that scored two more runs.
Pat Liddy improved his season record to 5-2, working eight innings. He allowed nine hits and one walk while fanning seven.
Reliever Ryan Adams retired all three batters he faced.
