MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Mike Saraceni had one goal and four assists to pace top-ranked Middlebury College to a 9-5 victory over Colby College in men’s lacrosse action Saturday.

The Panthers (2-0) scored two unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead over the White Mules (1-1) at halftime. The White Mules did not regain any steam in the third quarter as the Panthers notched another four unanswered goals.

Joshua Cleaver led Colby with three goals, while Trenholm Boggs completed the compliment with two nets on the afternoon. Barron Butler and Matt Roland provided an assist apiece in the loss.

Women’s lacrosse

Middlebury 17, Colby 7

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Char Glessner sparkled with five goals and an assist to lead Middlebury College to its 36th consecutive win as it routed Colby College, 17-7, in NESCAC women’s lacrosse action Saturday.

Cara Dionisi led Colby (0-1) with a pair of goals and an assist. Kate Wheeler also had two goals for the White Mules, while Ally King had one goal and two assists. Anna Schierberl Scherr stopped 19 shots in net in the loss.

Kate Simpson contributed to the Panther onslaught with a hat trick of her own.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin 3, Middlebury 0

BRUNSWICK — Britney Carr snuck a wrist shot through the pads of Katie Madouras late into the first period to provide the only goal needed as Bowdoin shutout Middlebury 3-0 in the NCAA quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (22-1-3) traded chances in a scoreless second period before having to kill off an early third-period penalty. Upon returning to full strength, Bowdoin improved its lead when Gillian McDonald pounced on Kristi Anderson’s rebounding shot to go upstairs on the Panther (19-3-4) goalie. After the Panthers pulled their goalie, Anderson clinched the win with an empty-netter.

Emily McKissock made nine saves in the final period and 24 overall to collect her fifth shutout for the Polar Bears this season. Bowdoin will face Manhattanville for the second straight year in the NCAA semifinals.

Wanless and Puglisi earn honors

GREENCASTLE, Ind. — Bates College women’s indoor track and field team sent two of its’ best to the 2003 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University this weekend and both are returning with All-America awards.

Junior thrower Liz Wanless finished second in the shot put with a mark of 50-0. Senior distance runner Kelley Puglisi finished sixth in the 1,500 meter run.

After just missing All-America status last year, Wanless earned her first accolade in the sport and will now focus on the upcoming outdoor season. Puglisi earned her second All-America honor in the 1,500 meters and will also look forward to the upcoming outdoor season.
