THOMASTON – Erika Gile and Brittany Gaudet each tallied a pair of goals as Winthrop rolled past Georges Valley, posting a 6-0 win Wednesday evening in field hockey.
Brianna Tupper added a goal and an assist, while Lauren Bergeron rounded out the scoring with two minutes left, picking up a crossed-pass from Gaudet at the left-post, and popping it in the net to secure the Ramblers (4-1) win.
Emily Vickerson stopped three shots in the first half, while Sarah Giampetro made four saves in the second half for the Winthrop victory. The Georges Valley (0-5) keeper, Sam Buchanan, turned aside 24 shots in the effort.
Telstar 1, Dirigo 0
BETHEL – Whitney Mills fired a shot from the right side of the circle into the cage with 10:57 remaining in regulation to lift Telstar to a 1-0 victory over Dirigo in a MVC field hockey matchup Wednesday. Brianna Douglass needed only one save in net to give the Rebels (1-3-1) their first win of 2006.
Dani Tompkins handled netkeeping duties for the Cougars (2-3), turning aside seven shots on the day.
Yarmouth 2, Poland 1
YARMOUTH – Katie Purpura scored, what would be the game-winning goal, with 2:00 left in the contest to push Yarmouth to a 2-1 over Poland in field hockey action.
Purpura batted the ball into the left corner after picking it up from a long hit. Hannah Arden tallied the first goal for the Yarmouth win.
The lone Poland goal was scored with :30 left in the game by Katy Champagne off a feed by Nicole Stacey. Dezaray DeBurra was fierce in net, stopping 20 shots.
Soccer
St. Dom’s 1, Traip 0
AUBURN – Jordan Paquet scored an unassisted goal with just 1:30 remaining in overtime to lift St. Dom’s to a 1-0 victory over Traip in a WMC soccer match-up. Paquet grabbed a through ball and one-touched it into the net. Elise Applegate needed only one save to record the shutout.
Pheobe Borden handled netkeeping duties for the Rangers (0-4-1), turning away nine shots in the contest.
Fryeburg 3, Poland 2 (2OT)
FRYEBURG – Felicia Hart tallied the game-winning double overtime goal with three minutes remaining as Fryeburg topped Poland 3-2 in more local soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
Courtney Gray and Danielle Boulanger scored back to back Poland (2-2) goals in the first half of the contest.
Fryeburg (2-3) rallied with what proved to be three unanswered goals, two by Hart and one by Coreen Hennessy. The game-winner was picked up by Elizabeth Atwood, brought through the middle of the field and passed onward to Hart who popped in for the victory.
