TRENTON, N.J. – The Portland Sea Dogs dropped game one of the Northern Division Championship Series, 3-1 to the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday night at Waterfront Park.

Charlie Manning worked three scoreless innings in relief of Phil Hughes to earn the victory. Devern Hansack pitched six and 1/3 innings on five hits and two runs to take the loss for Portland.

Hughes fanned 13 in six innings for the Thunder, walking one and surrendering a two-out run in the fifth inning. Portland scored the game’s first run on Chris Durbin’s run-scoring single to left field.

David Bacanibegan the frame with a single, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third on Jacoby Ellsbury’s ground out.

Hansack suffered the tough luck loss, yielding a two-out RBI single to Randy Ruiz, tying the game at one in the fifth inning. Ruiz provided the game-winning RBI, singling off Barry Hertzler in the seventh inning to score Brett Gardner.

Hideki Matsui followed with a RBI single to right field. Matsui is on a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment from the New York Yankees after suffering a fractured left wrist in early May against the Red Sox.

Portland stranded six runners, including four in the first three innings against Hughes. Bacani added two hits and scored the lone run for Portland. Kyle Jackson worked a scoreless eighth.
