BOSTON (AP) – Kevin Garnett became the youngest player in NBA history to play 1,000 games and scored 18 points to help the Boston Celtics beat the cold-shooting Chicago Bulls 96-80 Friday night.

Garnett reached the 1,000-game mark at the age of 32 years, 165 days. He broke the record of 33 years, 24 days set by Shawn Kemp on Dec. 20, 2002.

Three days after their emotional championship banner-raising ceremony, the Celtics dominated from the start and led by at least 10 points throughout the final three quarters. The Bulls made only 10 of 45 shots (22.2 percent) in the first half and went 25-for-84 (29.8 percent) for the game.

Garnett struggled in the opening 90-85 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers that followed the ceremony at which the Celtics’ 17th title banner was raised, players received championship rings and Paul Pierce cried. Then Pierce led Boston with 27 points in the close game.

The Celtics didn’t need that much from Pierce on Friday as they improved to 2-0 after going 66-16 last season on the way to their first championship since 1986.

Nine days after the Celtics’ title-clinching win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Bulls made point guard Derrick Rose of Memphis the first pick in the draft following their 33-49 season. He was one of their few bright spots Friday after he played inconsistently in Chicago’s season-opening 108-95 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday night, Vinny Del Negro’s debut as the Bulls coach.

On Friday, Rose led the Bulls with 18 points and made six of their 25 field goals. But he had just one assist. Tyrus Thomas and Ben Gordon scored 11 each.

Garnett went 7-for-11 from the field with 10 rebounds. In the opener against the Cavaliers, he went just 5-for-15 with 11 points and six rebounds.

Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo scored 14 each for Boston.

The Celtics led 24-13 after one quarter as the Bulls went 4-for-23 from the field and didn’t make a field goal until Kendrick Perkins was called for goaltending against Drew Gooden with 6:19 left in the period.

Boston opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run and Chicago went without a field goal until Rose made a layup with 7:18 remaining in the half.

Garnett scored eight of the Celtics last 12 points of the first half, giving them a 49-31 lead at intermission. Their lead ranged from 16 to 26 points the rest of the way.

Chicago’s starting forwards made just 4 of 27 shots – Thomas went 2-for-17 and Luol Deng, who led the Bulls with 21 points in the opener, was 2-for-10.

Boston’s starting forwards went 13-for-24 – Garnett’s 7-for-11 and Pierce’s 6-for-11. Perkins had 10 rebounds for Boston.
