BETHEL — The Gem, 23 Cross St., is one of 36 independent cinemas to win a grant to bring science education to the movies. 

The nationwide Science on Screen initiative promotes scientific literacy through entertainment, with a focus on under-served communities. 

Beginning in February, Science on Screen will pair fun films with mini-presentations by local experts on the first Friday of the month with a goal of promoting scientific literacy through entertainment. 

On Friday, Feb. 2, The Gem will present “Marjorie Prime,” a film that asks viewers to delve into the authenticity of their memories. How are memories constructed and how do they change over time? Can people trust their memories?

5:30 p.m.: Social hour (pizza and beer for purchase);

6:30 p.m.: “What are Memories?,” presentation by Steven Quackenbush of the University of Maine at Farmington psychology department;

7 p.m.: Screening of “Marjorie Prime.”
