The National Shoe and Leather Bank of Auburn moved their resources Monday morning to their new home at the corner of Court and Main streets. The valuables were moved under a heavy guard of bank officials and plain clothes men. The bank opened for business at 9 o’clock, the usual hour.
50 years ago, 1959
Things were really popping this morning in the Hawaiian Islands.
Because of unusual atmospheric conditions, dispatcher Anthony N. Emmi at the Lewiston Police Department radio picked up a police broadcast from Oahu Island, site of Honolulu and the hula skirts. Over there, the police were having troubles.
Some boys were riding around the streets and were shooting off guns in celebration of statehood, the island broadcaster was saying.
The LPD has picked up New Mexico police broadcasts before, but it was the first time that Oahu has been heard.
25 years ago, 1984
Considering the time of year, St. Doms and St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover, N.H., set and maintained a swift pace in their afternoon hockey match at the Youth Center Tuesday, a contest won by the Doms 5-4 as they came from behind for the third time. Third period goals by Mark Duchette and Dan Chasse, the only counters of the round, spelled victory for the Dominics in their first competitive effort of the season.
