100 years ago, 1909

Richard J. Jose, the world’s greatest contra tenor, supported by his own company, is coming to the Empire Theatre, Lewiston, next Wednesday afternoon and evening. In his new play, “Silver Threads,” Mr. Jose is now appearing. The play is taken from the song, “Silver Threads Among the Gold,” perhaps the most popular song ever composed. A very sweet play has been written, and Mr. Jose’s remarkable voice was never heard to better advantage than in his latest success.

50 years ago, 1959

Maine Aluminum Co. of Lewiston will construct a new $21,000 restaurant at Lisbon for Willie Fortier, whose old eating establishment in the heart of town burned down a few weeks ago. Walls and roof will be of aluminum while the interior will be done in wood.

25 years ago, 1984

Ending two years of competition, Lewiston, Auburn and Central Maine power Co. appear ready to sign a joint agreement to build a hydroelectric generating station at Great Falls on the Androscoggin River.

Lewiston Mayor Alfred A. Plourde and Auburn Mayor John J. Cleveland have called for a special joint city council meeting Monday afternoon to allow city officials to review a proposed agreement between the two cities, CMP and CMP’s wholly owned subsidiary, Union Water Power Co.
