SUMNER — Boxberry students recently took a field trip to Wrinkle in Thyme Farm. The students viewed the farm, patted some sheep, a goat and a rooster, and then went inside the workshop to learn how to make a wool-fiber patch.

Marty and Mary-Ann, owners of the farm, demonstrated how to take small bits of their own hand-dyed wool fiber and poke it with a needle into a wool square patch, which rested atop a foam square. The wool fiber strands are then stuck into the wool square patch, creating a picture.

Students used a provided template drawn onto the wool square patch. The students chose between a picture of a pumpkin, a maple leaf and a sheep, but many different images could also be created. Boxberry students’ squares will be displayed at the school with a written summary of the process for creating them and the connection to a thematic unit on how wool was worn as tunics and coats in ancient Greece.
