UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Mike Modano scored his second goal of the game 35 seconds into overtime, Marty Turco made 23 saves, and Dallas beat the New York Islanders 3-2 Monday night for the Stars’ sixth straight win. Modano knocked in a rebound from the slot of Stephane Robidas’ shot to give the Stars’ their first win over the Islanders sinc 2001.

Sabres 3, Capitals 1

WASHINGTON – Jochen Hecht had two goals and an assist to lead the Buffalo Sabres to their season-high fifth straight victory, 3-1 over the Washington Capitals.

Hecht scored Buffalo’s first two goals, with the second snapping a 1-1 tie in the second period. He then assisted on Jason Pominville’s insurance goal later in the period at the end of a 2-on-1 breakaway.

Jeff Halpern had given Dallas a 2-1 lead in the third period, but that was erased with 2:38 left in regulation when Miroslav Satan tied it for New York.

Turco made just his second start in six games as Mike Smith has staked his claim to Dallas’ No. 1 goalie spot. Turco earned his second straight victory following an 0-1-2 stretch in which he allowed 14 goals.

The Stars have outscored opponents 20-7 during their winning streak and have earned points in eight straight games (6-0-2).

Modano, who has eight goals this season and 515 in 18 NHL seasons, got Dallas into a 1-1 tie in the second period after a big gaffe by Turco put the Stars behind. Halpern made it 2-1 when he took a pass from defenseman Sergei Zubov to the right of the Islanders net and slid a shot under the glove of goalie Rick DiPietro at 6:07 of the third.

Turco got out with a win despite a goal he surely would like back.

With the Islanders playing short-handed, Richard Park raced alone after a loose puck that slid toward the Dallas end. Turco, never shy about leaving his crease, skated out toward the oncharging Park but didn’t get to the puck in time. Park corralled it above the right circle, moved around Turco and stared at an empty net.

Park controlled the puck at the goal line, worked away from Zubov, who tried to cover for Turco, and tucked in a backhander at 9:07.

Modano tied it 2:30 later, scoring against DiPietro, his U.S. Olympic teammate.

DiPietro had another good performance against the Stars, who beat him for the first time in three outings. He was especially sharp in the third when he made eight of his 28 saves.

The Islanders thought they had the go-ahead goal 4:30 into the third when Chris Simon slammed Mike Comrie’s pass into Turco’s pads as the goalie slid across the crease. New York captain Bill Guerin raised his arms in celebration, but referee Dean Morton signaled no goal, and the call was upheld by video review.

New York hasn’t scored more than two goals in nine consecutive games, going 4-4-1 in that span, and have an NHL-low 51 goals.

Notes: The Islanders failed to score in the first period for the sixth straight game. They have netted only 10 goals in 21 opening frames this season. … Guerin, who entered with only eight penalty minutes in 19 games, went off for hooking, holding and tripping in the first two periods. … Dallas was 0-for-5 on the power play after converting 10 of 21 the previous seven games. … Smith, the NHL’s third star last week, is 4-0 with a 1.01 goals-against average in the past four outings. … The teams hadn’t met on Long Island since New York’s 4-1 win on Nov. 6, 2003.
