NEW YORK – Roger Clemens won in his return from a suspension and Bobby Abreu hit a go-ahead homer that clanked off the foul pole, carrying the New York Yankees to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Clemens gave up Cameron Maybin’s first major league homer but pitched out of trouble for six innings, striking out eight to match his season high. Jorge Posada also homered and finished with three hits for the Yankees, who took control by scoring four times in the sixth.

Mariano Rivera tossed a hitless ninth for his 20th save in 23 chances, a huge sigh of relief for New York. Rivera struggled in his previous two outings, blowing a save and taking a loss, before consecutive days off.

Clemens (5-5) gave up 10 hits, his most since allowing 11 on Sept. 19, 2005, with Houston at Pittsburgh, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He was working on 10 days’ rest after serving a five-game suspension for hitting Alex Rios in the back with a pitch on Aug. 7 during a testy series in Toronto.

Indians 8, Devil Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Jake Westbrook gave up one run over seven innings, Asdrubal Cabrera hit his first major league homer and the Cleveland Indians beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-1 Saturday night.

Grady Sizemore also went deep for the AL Central-leading Indians, who extended their advantage over the Tigers to 11/2 games. Detroit lost 5-2 against the New York Yankees. Cleveland has won three in a row following a four-game losing streak.

Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO – Steve Trachsel got off to a rough start. Once he started keeping the ball down, he was well on his way to his first win in more than two months.

Backed by J.R. House’s first major league homer, Trachsel won for the first time in 10 starts and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Saturday.

The right-hander struggled early, giving up three runs and five hits in the first two innings.

Rangers 5, Twins 0

MINNEAPOLIS – Marlon Byrd homered and drove in four runs, sending Kameron Loe and the Texas Rangers past the Minnesota Twins 5-0 on Saturday night.

Loe (6-9) came off the disabled list and threw five shutout innings, overcoming five walks by ending four of those innings with two runners on. The Twins stranded a man on third base three times, and Boof Bonser (5-10) lost his eighth straight decision.

Royals 7, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. – Jason Smith hit a pair of two-run homers, Ross Gload also connected and the Kansas City Royals captured the season series with the Oakland Athletics for the first time in nine years with a 7-3 victory Saturday night.

Odalis Perez (8-11) recorded his first career decision against Oakland, winning back-to-back starts for the first time since April 20 and 25.

, and Kansas City owns its first three-game winning streak since getting four straight victories from July 26-29.
