LEWISTON — In a game in which both teams struggled offensively, one constant remained for Lewiston: Victoria Harris.

Harris scored 17 points on her senior night to lead the Blue Devils to a 38-29 victory over Leavitt in a girls’ basketball matchup Thursday night.

“She was big, she’s big almost every night,” Lewiston coach Lynn Girouard said. “She gets after it on the defensive side and gets almost every single rebound on the offensive and defensive side she just crashes the board hard. She’s just an outstanding player and gives me 100 percent every night.”

Harris was one of three seniors playing their last regular-season game at Lewiston High School, along with Gabrielle Wilson and Minaya Abu. For the Blue Devils, Thursday’s game was about letting the seniors enjoy their last home game.

“Mainly, it was a night for our seniors, get them in the game a lot,” Girouard said. “Get them to play together in the last home game of the season and have fun.”

In the first quarter, Leavitt’s Taylor White scored the first six of her eight points for the Hornets. Harris had to help the Blue Devils keep pace with four of her own, keeping the scored knotted at nine after one quarter. From that point, Lewiston (8-10) controlled the game.

Leavitt struggled to find the bottom of the net in the second quarter, not scoring until 90 seconds remained in the period. Harris scored seven in the second and was aided by four other Lewiston scorers in the quarter, outscoring Leavitt 14-3. The senior closed out the half with a strong layup that earned a free throw after grabbing two consecutive offensive rebounds.

“We just weren’t taking care of the basketball in the first half,” Leavitt coach Dave Gerrish said. “Second half I thought we found a little bit of a groove but we could never find any kind of rhythm and I don’t think we played with much energy tonight.”

Leavitt kept the third quarter about even by working their press defense well. Lewiston’s Maddy Foster hit two 3s to keep the Blue Devils’ comfortable lead in tact.

The 30-18 lead for Lewiston heading into the fourth was too much for the opposition, despite seven fourth-quarter points from senior Sophia Gilbert of Leavitt, including back-to-back traditional fashioned 3-point plays. Harris closed the game with six points of her own in the last quarter, leaving the Lewiston High School floor for the last time a winner.

“It is my last time playing here so I wanted to make it special,” Harris said. “It was fun. I enjoyed this game and every game previous.”
