100 years ago, 1909

All public schools in Lewiston will begin Monday, September 13th, and it is hoped all pupils will enter promptly the first day.

Children four years of age or who will be four years of age by the last day of September may enter the kindergarten or sub-primary class. Children shall be regularly admitted to the first grade during the month of September only, but no child under five years of age shall be admitted.

50 years ago, 1959

A 57-year-old man from Canal Street had his problems last night.

Lewiston police rushed to Lisbon and Maple streets to find him stuck to a fire hydrant, his feet sticking up in the air and his head down below. His pants had caught on the knob of the hydrant.

Officer Robert Federico and an unidentified person from among the good-sized audience got him untangled from the hydrant.

Then the man’s pants fell down.

He was booked on an intoxication charge.

25 years ago, 1984

For three decades Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce leaders and volunteers extended handshakes and hospitality at community welcoming ceremonies for Bates College incoming freshmen.

As a result of a year’s extensive planning that same community welcome is being offered this year to about 300 other freshmen who attend Lewiston-Auburn post secondary schools.

“In all,” Chamber President Roy P. Willis said, “the Chamber will be feting nearly 1,000 new freshmen and selected members of faculty and administration. This is a very  satisfying moment for our Chamber leaders since we have been trying for nearly two years now to devise a program whereby all incoming non-resident freshmen, not just the Bates class, would be honored.”
