BOSTON (AP) – Bobby Butler scored the game-winner and Kevin Regan saved 44 shots to lead regular-season Hockey East champion New Hampshire to a 3-2 double-overtime win over Massachusetts in the conference semifinals on Friday.

Greg Collins had a goal and an assist and Danny Rossman also scored for the Wildcats, who advanced to the conference championship for the second time in three years. New Hampshire lost to Boston College 3-1 in the 2005 title game.

The Wildcats will play Boston College in tonight’s championship game. The Eagles routed defending tournament champion Boston University 6-2.

After a scoreless third period and first overtime, Butler ended the game 1 minute, 30 seconds into the second extra session with his eighth goal of the year.

With the puck deep in the Minutemen zone, Collins poked the puck away from Brett Watson and to Butler, who lifted it past UMass goalie Jon Quick.

New Hampshire is aiming for its third tournament title and first since 2003.

The Wildcats won the Hockey East regular-season title, then swept their best-of-three quarterfinal series with Providence last weekend.

UMass went 2-1 against New Hampshire in the regular season and appeared to have momentum again.

After falling behind 1-0 early, the Minutemen scored two straight and took a 2-1 lead 16 seconds into the second period on a Chris Capraro goal.

But Rossman’s first career score tied it at 2 13:57 into the second period, and Regan took over from there.

He saved 12 shots in the third period, 13 in the first overtime – including one on a Will Ortiz breakaway midway through the period – and one more in the second overtime before Butler’s game-winner.

Alex Berry and Capraro each scored and Quick saved 38 shots for the fourth-seeded Minutemen, whose six-game winning streak came to an end.
