CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – Five players drove in three runs apiece as North Carolina-Wilmington eliminated Maine from the NCAA Division I baseball tournament with a 21-19 win on Saturday in a game that featured 39 hits.
Jason Appel, Grayson Evans and Mike Marbry each collected four hits for the Seahawks (42-21), who overcame deficits of 6-0 and 10-5.
Maine (35-22-1) was led by shortstop Curt Smith, who went 5 for 5 with five RBIs, and third baseman Kevin McAvoy, who had three hits and drove in four, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the final score.
N.C.-Wilmington will play Sunday against either North Carolina or Winthrop.
The Black Bears struck first with six runs in the first inning, capped by a three-run homer by catcher Sean Parker.
N.C.-Wilmington responded with five runs in the top of the second on two singles, two hit batters and two errors.
The Seahawks broke open the game with eight runs in the sixth inning, when they sent 12 batters to the plate.
Blake Hundley (2-0) picked up the win for Wilmington with 2 2-3 innings of relief. Maine starter Jose Mendoza (3-2) gave up 11 runs – seven earned – over 5 1-3 innings.
