ATLANTA (AP) – Vyacheslav Kozlov had three goals and an assist and Marian Hossa added two goals and an assist Monday in Atlanta’s 8-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators that spoiled the return of former Thrasher Dany Heatley.

Ilya Kovalchuk added a goal and three assists for Atlanta, which ended Ottawa’s four-game winning streak.

It was the worst loss of the season for the Senators, the highest scoring team in the league. It was the most goals Ottawa allowed this season and the Senators were 0-for-6 on the power play.

Heatley, who at his request was traded to Ottawa on Aug. 23 for Hossa and Greg DeVries, scored a meaningless goal with less than 7 minutes remaining, his eighth straight game with a point. He is among the league leaders with 55 points (26 goals).

He expected a warm reception from Atlanta fans and didn’t get it.

The Thrashers took a 3-0 lead after one period, getting a power-play goal from Kovalchuk, his 25th, a goal from Kozlov and a short-handed score by Hossa.

Atlanta led 6-2 after two periods, getting goals from Hossa – his 21st and fourth in two games – and two from Kozlov, his 12th and 13th, in handing Ottawa goaltender Ray Emery only his second loss (8-2-1). Emery made 19 saves.

DeVries added his sixth goal with just over 8 minutes left and Serge Aubin scored his fifth a minute later for an 8-2 lead.

Ottawa’s second-period goals were by Chris Neil, his 10th, and Chris Kelly, his third. The Thrashers replaced starting goaltender Michael Garnett with about 13 minutes left with rookie Kari Lehtonen shortly after Kelly’s goal. Garnett had 12 saves and Lehtonen stopped 12 of 13.

Heatley was greeted by some cheers mixed with boos when he came out for the pre-game warmups and when the starting lineups were announced the boos were somewhat louder than the cheers from the Philips Arena crowd.

And, when play began, Heatley drew boos each time he touched the puck with the loudest coming when he scored.

“They’ve always been good to me,” Heatley said before the game. “They paid their tickets, they can do what they want.”

He did wind up with some cheers when he received a hooking penalty early in the final period.

Heatley, the NHL’s rookie of the year in 2001-02, wanted a fresh start, away from the constant reminders of his 2003 Atlanta car wreck that killed teammate and friend Dan Snyder.

Heatley was also injured in the accident and then was sentenced to three years’ probation on Feb. 4, 2004, after pleading guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide and three lesser charges.

Heatley was left with a broken jaw and a serious knee injury that forced him to miss the first 51 games of the 2003-04 season.

The Thrashers went over the .500 mark (18-17-6) for the first time since they were 2-1.

Notes: The Thrashers recalled F Karl Stewart from Chicago of the AHL on Monday. … The Thrashers have earned one point in 11 of their last 12 games. … Heatley started the season with a team-record 22-game point streak (38 points). He has three game-winning goals and was named to Canada’s Olympic team. … Ottawa gave up five goals twice this season.
