PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Ryan Shannon and Aaron Gavey scored power-play goals in the final minutes as the Portland Pirates rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Providence Bruins in an American Hockey League game Friday night.

The Bruins (0-1-0-0), who were playing their season opener, led 3-2 when Mark Stuart was penalized for roughing. Shannon slid a wrist shot under Tim Thomas (24 saves) at 18:23 for the tying goal. Providence’s Jay Leach was penalized for interference 19 seconds later and Garvey scored the game-winner at 19:05 on a snap shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.

Zenon Konopka recorded three assists for the Pirates (1-1-0-0) while goalie Mike Wall made 24 saves. Portland led 2-1 entering the third period but Providence tied it on Eric Healey’s power-play goal at 5:57.

With Portland’s Aaron Rome in the penalty box for tripping, Jonathan Sigalet gave Providence a 3-2 lead by scoring his first professional goal at 9:35. Sigalet, Boston’s fourth-round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, is a 19-year-old rookie defenseman who played two seasons at Bowling Green.

Portland jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Trevor Gillie’s goal at 13:09 of the first period and Dustin Penner’s score at 6:49 of the second. The Bruins then scored the first of their three power-play goals when Eric Nickulas knocked in the rebound of a shot by Healey at 8:15 of the second period.
